Guard shacks are buildings where security personnel and equipment can be stationed.
A guard shack also known as security booths and guard booths, is a building where security personnel and equipment can be stationed. People have always needed security, whether it was for the king’s buildings, a graveyard, or for an important person.
Guard shacks have been around for years, as far back as the 18’Th century where sentries would sleep between the duty hours. These shacks would house tables, shelves arms rack, and a fireplace. Some shacks were also equipped so the sentries could eat inside.
Today a guard shack is usually used to protect an institution, a government building, or a commercial or residential facility. Usually placed at the entrance as a checkpoint to monitor and secure the area. They are usually a little armored booth with security cameras and a chair for a security officer to sit. They are made out of materials that are designed to withstand an explosion and bullets. They have become more popular with recent events such as September 11, as well as other terrorist acts and bombings throughout the United States.

Who uses the guard shacks?
The guards that sit in these security booths are trained and licensed, and they follow the state requirements in order to perform their duty. They may be expected to maintain order and preclude criminal activity. Work may include, museums, movie lots, college campuses, and transportation terminals. Some of these venues require a security guard for 24-hour surveillance. Most of the time the work is routine, stopping cars, stopping people, watching security cameras, but trouble can occur at anytime. This is a dangerous job, security officers get hurt and even killed, there are guard fatalities every year in the United States. This is why they must be trained, follow protocol and meet certain requirements.

What are guard shacks made of?
They are usually about 3 by 5 feet in diameter. Though there are different types of shacks made from different materials, the typical shack is built like the following:
