Girls Basketball: Woonsocket Falls to Barrington on a Special Night for One Villa Novan
It was a close game at halftime, but the Eagles had too much interior presence and balanced scoring for the Villa Novans to handle.
Woonsocket hosted Barrington High School on Thursday evening in a battle of undefeated Divsion I Girls Basketball squads. The lead see-sawed in the first half, but the Eagles pulled away in the second half and defeated Woonsocket, 51-32.
The Villa Novans trailed 4-3 early on before Kailey Fugere stepped up to the line and tied the game at four points apiece. The foul shot upped her Woonsocket career total to 1000 points, making her the fifth member of 1000 point club.
"Kailey is a great athlete and a wonderful kid. She's very coachable. We've got five kids in the 1000 point club and four of them have played together in the last handful of years. So that's very exciting. And we hope to have a chance to honor them with her later in the season," Woonsocket Coach George Coddere said.

It was an emotional moment for Fugere and the team, but she was able to put it behind her and make her second free throw, enabling her teammates to focus on the task at hand after the milestone.
Both teams played phenomenal team defense in the first half and the lead switched hands six times, with the first half ending in a 20-16 Barrington advantage. Kayla Bauer led the way with six points for the Eagles, while Michelle Brayboy contributed half of the Villa Novans' output with eight points.

Barrington made some halftime adjustments to try to disrupt Fugere's post play and were doubling her with much more regularity in the second half. The strategy paid dividends immediately in the first few minutes of the second half, as the Eagles went on a 10-2 run with six of those points coming in transition.
Barrington led by twelve after the run and their lead never dwindled into single digits for the remainder of the contest. The Eagles' interior play frustrated Fugere and provided the bulk of the scoring for Barrington in the second half. Barrington outscored the Villa Novans 31-16 in the second half, led by Sphomore Forward Maura Kelty, who put up ten points and did a good job defensively on Fugere. The front line of Kelty, Bauer, and Caitlyn Nolan played great on both sides of the ball, altering shots on the defensive end and rebounding well on both ends of the court. The Eagles made their foul shots late and prevented any sort of comeback, winning 51-32.
Barrington keeps their undefeated season going and will host a holiday tournament on Wednesday.
The Villa Novans fall to 2-1 in league play and will look to get back in the groove at the Franklin Holiday Classic on Wednesday.
