Girls Lacrosse: Classical Takes Mounties

Classical ends season with a 12-7 victory over Mount Saint Charles.

The Mounties girls lacrosse team (5-8) traveled to Classical High School to take on the Purple (11-3) on Friday night. The game, played on senior night at the Al Morro Athletic Complex, ended the season with a 12-7 win for Classical.

Purple senior Alexia Costa scored only two minutes into the game but the Mounties responded with three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead. Junior Regan Kelliher scored the final two goals of the run, adding one more later in the game.

Classical took control of the game during a three minute stretch towards the end of the first half. Senior Kimberly Hernandez scored a goal with seven minutes left, tying the game at 3. The Purple scored four more goals during the three minute span, to take a commanding 7-3 lead.

Sophomore Lauren Carroll scored two goals and Hernandez scored two of her game high six goals during the stretch.

In the opening stages of the second half, Classical opened up their lead with a goal by Carroll about five minutes into the half, bringing the score to 10-4.

MSC would not go down easily however, and Alexandra Goralski scored two goals in a row, cutting their deficit to 10-6.

Classical regained control of the game with two unanswered goals, upping the lead to 12-6 with five minutes remaining in the game. The Mounties added a goal with 15 seconds left, and fell to the Purple 12-7.

Mounties coach, Brenda Hammerschmidt, was pleased with her team's performance. "I am really proud of them and they played the best game of the season," she said.

Classical's coach, Steve Jackson, spoke about an area of the game the team showed improvement and another they need to work. "We cleared the ball a lot better than we have been," he said, "We have to run our plays on offense better."
