Girls Soccer: Villa Novans Late Goal Trips up Thunderbolts

Woonsocket scores late, defeating Cranston East 1-0 in an Injury Fund contest.

Woonsocket High School girls soccer team matched up against Cranston East's Thunderbolts in the Injury Fund Tournament at Cranston Stadium Saturday afternoon. In the first game of the tournament, East dominated ball possession and controlled the midfield, but the Villa Novans took advantage of a breakdown in defense, scoring the only goal of the game.

Cranston East executed slick passing in the midfield throughout the 25 minute contest. The Thunderbolts looked sharp and controlled the action in the game.

They had many scoring chances and maintained possession for at least 70 percent of the game, but heir shots, lack of execution in the offensive zone, and the Novan's strong defense brought the Thunderbolts down.

"We seem to panic when we get close in the offensive zone," head coach Lauren Tomasso said, "They seem to pass when they should shoot, and shoot when they should pass."

A turnover led to a breakaway for the Villa Novans with just under three minutes left in the match. Woonsocket freshman Nasheeda Armstrong struck the ball well and in a perfect location. The shot went to the far post in the lower 90, finding the back of the net.
