Hockey Team Puts the Community First

The Mount Saint Charles girl's hockey team stresses the importance of giving back to the community.

A group of athletes are taking the time to give back to the community with various service projects while they compete in their athletic season.

Being on a team isn’t always about individual or athletic accomplishments, said Mount Saint Charles girl’s hockey coach Tony DiLorenzo.

“I want the team to understand that giving back to the community has no equal,” he said.

The Mount Saint Charles girl’s hockey team held a coat drive last Friday where the girls donated about 160 coats to Veterans Memorial School in Pawtucket for needy students. The girls also held food drives for Thanksgiving and Christmas and collected over 30 food baskets for each holiday.

DiLorenzo feels that the 16 girls on his team will benefit from giving back to the community in the long run.

“There is a tuition to get into Mount Saint Charles,” DiLorenzo said. “Most families are not so much in need and we don’t want to forget about those that are truly are in need.”

The Mount Saint Charles girl’s hockey team plans to invite children of physical needs to skate with them during their practice time and have the children come watch one of their games in January.

These community efforts teach the girls compassion and will help them emerge as leaders in the future, DiLorenzo said.

The hockey team’s season began in November and they currently hold a record of 1-3 after playing the three best teams in the league, DiLorenzo said.

The Mount Saint Charles girl’s hockey team will end their season in the Middle of March.
