ICYMI: How Big is Woonsocket's Irish Population?

Over the years, St. Patrick’s Day has become more than a day of appreciation for St. Patrick. The holiday has turned into a day to celebrate all things Irish.

Rhode Island should have no problem getting into the Irish spirit. About 17.9 percent of Rhode Island residents claimed Irish ancestry, the second most popular ancestry in the state, according to census data.

While everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, how many people in Woonsocket have some Irish in them every day of the year?

The U.S. Census Bureau reports 12.6 percent of the Woonsocket population claims Irish ancestry. Of a total population of 41,012, about 5,162 people in Woonsocket are Irish.

Tuesday, March 17 isn’t the only day to appreciate Irish heritage. The entire month of March was named Irish-American Heritage Month by Congress in 1991.
