LGBTQ Health Expert Joins Thundermist

Tim Cavanaugh will practice family medicine.

From Thundermist Health Center: Tim Cavanaugh, MD, a nationally-recognized leader in LGBTQ health, joined Thundermist Health Center as a family medicine provider. Dr. Cavanaugh will care for trans* and LGBQ patients, in addition to the general population, at Thundermist’s Woonsocket location.

Dr. Cavanaugh has dedicated his career to serving LGBTQ patients in the community health center setting. He partners with patients to help them be as healthy and well as possible. He has also dedicated countless hours presenting cultural competency training to fellow health care providers.

“Health care needs to be tailored to each individual patient,” said Dr. Cavanaugh. “Patient-centered medical care is only possible if we have the appropriate screenings and conversations to understand all circumstances impacting a patient’s health. Thundermist Health Center provides integrated care in an affirming and inclusive environment. I’m proud to join their team.”

Most recently, Dr. Cavanaugh worked at Fenway Health in Boston where he served as medical director for the Transgender Health Program. Previously, he worked at the Comprehensive Community Action Program (CCAP) in Cranston where he helped develop an innovative hepatitis prevention program, which delivered hepatitis vaccines and HIV testing services in non-traditional settings.

He is a graduate of Dartmouth University. Dr. Cavanaugh completed his fellowship training in family medicine at the University of Virginia, and is a certified physician through the American Board of Family Practices.
