The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Woonsocket.
Good day, neighbors! It's me again, Kathleen, your host of the Woonsocket Daily.
First, today's weather:
Thunderstorms. High: 60 Low: 32. I may stand out in the storms for 60-degree weather!
Here are the top stories in Woonsocket today:
- A Woonsocket man was killed in a wrong-way crash in Massachusetts Saturday night shortly before 10 pm. Massachusetts State Police said 35-year-old Jonathan Marmol of Woonsocket was the driver of a 2004 Honda Accord. He was pronounced dead at the scene. State Police responded to reports of a two-vehicle crash on Route 146 North in Uxbridge. Marmol was driving southbound when he crossed the median into the northbound side of the highway, before hitting a 2018 Subaru Outback and both caught fire. (WLNE-TV (ABC6))
- The Polar Plunge was held in Narragansett this weekend to benefit Special Olympics Rhode Island. Volunteers and members of local law enforcement took a dip in the ocean to benefit Special Olympics Rhode Island this weekend. The polar plunge helps raise money and awareness for Special Olympics Rhode Island.(Turn to 10)
- Rep. Robert Phillips, Woonsocket, and Sen. Stephen Archambault, Smithfield, lead the commission to redraw political districts in Rhode Island. The Commission has scheduled hearings around the state to present the plans. They are seeking public input for the layout of the General Assembly districts. There will also be a presentation and discussion about whether prisoners should be counted at their home addresses instead of their prison address for census and redistricting purposes. The first hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. tonight in the auditorium of Smithfield High School. Wear your mask. (Woonsocket Call)
- The Woonsocket season of giving is a big one this year with nonprofits and the Woonsocket Police Department collecting toys for Woonsocket children in need. One very involved family, the Augers will collect toys at their home at 329 Wood Ave. on Sunday, Dec. 12, from 4 to 7 p.m. While past events have included an open house, this year's event will be drive-by style, with the toys distributed to local families in need by the Woonsocket Police Department. From my notebook:
- The State of Rhode Island is extending a nutrition program to provide about 2,500 boxes of local seasonal produce to low-income seniors. Eligible seniors participating in the program typically exchange coupons for fruits, vegetables, honey, and fresh herbs at farmers' markets. DEM started a pilot program earlier in the year as seniors did not want to attend farmers' markets due to COVID. By extending the pilot program, Farm Fresh Rhode Island can source items from local growers and deliver the boxes to senior centers. ( Turnto10)
- Hollywood loves Rhode Island! "Mr. Birthday" is a film made by Rhode Islanders and filmed completely in Rhode Island. It opens in theaters Dec. 17. (ABC6 News)

Thanks for following along and staying informed with Kathleen Stoddart. I live in Woonsocket and have 3 grown kids and 3 dog babies to keep me busy. I love hardware stores and can be seen checking out all the cool stuff. Being a Realtor, I sort of have an excuse. We're in the Christmas season when I'm baking up a storm for our service workers and neighbors!
