Mounties Survive Scare Against Skippers

MSC boys volleyball team defeats North Kingstown 3-2

The standings and records of the teams do not always reflect the game that will transpire. It was one of those nights on Monday at Mount Saint Charles High School.

The boys volleyball team (7-1) hosted North Kingstown (5-5, 4-5 in league play) on May 2. Despite losing two of the first three games, Mount rallied to win the final two games, taking the match 3-2.

The Skippers led for a majority of the first game. Mount closed the gap to 13-11, but North rallied to win seven out of the next eight points, opening up a 20-12 lead. They went on to win the first game 25-15. North senior Neil Hourahan led a 7-3 run at the end of the game, notching three kills during the streak.

Game two was the opposite, as the Mounties held the lead from the start. After leading 12-6, they used a 6-2 run to extend the lead to double digits. Ultimately the Mounties won the game 25-17.

It was a back and forth battle in the third game, as neither team could establish a comfortable lead. Late in the game, the Mounties led 21-18. However, North Kingstown ended the game on a 7-2 run, claiming it 25-23. Skippers senior Sam Hall-Stinson notched a kill on the game's final point.

Throughout the early and middle portions of the fourth game, the score was close. The game was tied at 3, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14. The Mounties ended the game on a 11-3 run, taking it 25-17 as they forced a decisive fifth game.

The Mounties set out to protect their homecourt in the final game, and never trailed in it. They had an opportunity to win the game, as they served with a 14-9 lead. In the fifth game, only 15 points were needed to win.

North Kingstown mounted one final rally scoring two points in a row to cut their deficit to 14-11. On the next point Hourahan attempted a kill and it sailed out of bounds. The Mounties won the game 15-11 and the match 3-2.

Mounties coach, Josh D'Abate, praised North's squad. "They are a solid team," he said. "I am really proud of the way our guys played," he added, "Before the 5th game, I told them don’t let them take it."

North head coach, Joanne Fitts, was pleased with her team's effort and play. "We are going to be a force to contend with when we want to be," she said.

"We have not even come close to our potential yet," the coach added, "We have to get rid of the unforced errors."
