Beginning college as an adult can be a daunting decision for older adults. Many potential students are single heads of household with families, jobs, and commitments outside of school. They face an unknown learning environment and younger peers who may seem more prepared for the transition to college; in addition, understanding the college culture, financial aid procedure, and college application process can be overwhelming. For almost 90 percent of our TTC students, English is not their first language, which can also be difficult when trying to pursue an academic degree. When attending the program, students soon realize that these barriers can become challenges to face, and they can overcome them successfully.
For more than twelve years, TTC has offered non-traditional adult students a chance to overcome the odds against being successful in college. By enrolling in the program, students experience first-hand thec ollege culture and expectations as well as develop better academic and personal skills for college; mostly, TTC builds confidence in the students’ ability to succeed and achieve their academic, career, and life goals.

While attending TTC, students enroll for free in ENGL 0850 at CCRI in order to build their reading skills and prepare for college level work. Upon completion of the program, volunteer mentors provide perspective and personalized attention to each graduate as he or she transitions into the academic world.
