Second Body Found In Former Woonsocket Mayor's Home Was Her Boyfriend

Investigators said there were no signs of foul play in the deaths of former Mayor Susan Menard and her boyfriend Daniel Grabowski.

WOONSOCKET, RI — The state medical examiner on Friday identified the second body found in former Woonsocket Mayor Susan Menard's home as her boyfriend Daniel Grabowski.

Grabowski, along with Menard, were found dead inside her Marian Lane home. Police were at the former mayor's home on Marian Lane on Monday night after neighbors reported a foul smell. Neighbors told police they had not seen Menard in several weeks. Police then entered the home through a window and found the bodies.

Investigators said there were no signs of foul play. The state medical examiner said Menard's cause of death of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, while Grabowski's was type 2 diabetes.

Menard served as Woonsocket mayor from 1995 until 2009, according to the city's website. She was the first woman to be elected as the city’s mayor.

Prior to serving as mayor, Menard spent a decade on the city council and four years on the school committee.

"Mayor Menard has left an enduring legacy in Woonsocket through her many years of public service, and she will also be remembered for her pioneering achievements in advancing the role of women in Rhode Island municipal politics being only the second elected female mayor in the history of the state," Woonsocket Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt said in a statement.

Grabowski was a former executive director of the Woonsocket Boys and Girls Club.
