Here are the top five stories in Woonsocket today:
- Former Central Falls Mayor James Diossa announced Monday he's running for Rhode Island General Treasurer, becoming the first candidate to officially enter the race. Rhode Island's General Treasurer is mostly responsible for overseeing the state's pension investments, along with other, less well-known financial initiatives. Diossa, was the first Latino mayor of Central Falls and came into office in 2012 shortly after the cash-strapped city entered into bankruptcy proceedings. He claims his leadership during that rocky time, for working their way back to Central Falls being "in the black." (WPRI.com)
- A registered sex offender Chandler Cardente of Cranston has been charged with abducting a 12-year-old girl last week, according to Burrillville Police. An investigation into her disappearance revealed the girl had been lured into Cardente's vehicle after chatting with him online. Police found her and are investigating what happened to her in the approximately seven hours she was with him. (wpri.com)
- On Monday, the Health Department reported 2,392 new positive coronavirus cases since data was last released on Friday. Health officials also disclosed 12 more COVID-19-related deaths, which brought the death toll to 2,969. (WPRI)

- Nursing homes across Rhode Island are running out of time. As facilities statewide deal with workforce shortages, a new law establishing long-term care standards goes into effect next month, which includes a staffing mandate.
