Woonsocket Man Indicted For Rape

Leopoldo Belen, 33, was indicted by the Providence County Grand Jury on Monday.

The Providence County Grand Jury on Monday reported out an indictment charging Leopolodo Belen, 33, of 381 Third Ave., Woonsocket, with four counts of first-degree rape for his alleged brutal assault on a 21-year-old woman in April.

Leopoldo allegedly raped, beat, choked and held the woman captive for hours before she was able to escape her own apartment. She ran to a neighbor who called for help.

Belen is due to be arraigned in Providence County Superior Court on Sept. 10.

Belen has been held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston since his arrest.

Court records show he has served numerous stints at the ACI for a litany of charges dating back to the early 2000s including felony assault, drug possession, receiving stolen goods and carrying a pistol without a permit.
