Woonsocket Police Officers Shot: Portsmouth Man Indicted
After exchanging gunfire, police said Tyler Chandler shot Officer Travis Young in the thigh.

WOONSOCKET, RI — A Portsmouth man was indicted by the State Grand Jury Monday after police said he shot at several police officers and wounded one.
Tyler Chandler, 21, of Portsmouth on July 2 was charged with assault with a deadly weapon (five counts), discharging a firearm when committing a crime of violence (five counts), and carrying a firearm without a license.
The incident started at about 4:35 a.m. Chandler was seen walking near 182 Cumberland St. and carrying a handgun. Police said he fired shots at officers who were trying to catch him. Police then fired back on Cumberland Street and later on Elm Street, where police said Chandler shot Officer Travis Young in the thigh. The wound was described as "serious, but not life threatening."

Chandler was later surrounded by police behind 685 Social St. He was taken into custody after several hours of negotiations, police said. Chandler was not shot.
Chandler, who has been held without bail since his arrest, is scheduled to be arraigned in Providence County Superior Court on October 17, 2018.
