Woonsocket Schools Selected to Test Mentoring STEM Curriculum
The program was recently awarded a $30,000 Amgen Foundation Grant to further develop the curriculum.
A curriculum to inspire new scientists used two Woonsocket schools as a model to test a new site-based Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum.
Students from Bryant University were paired with students at Kevin K. Coleman and Citizen’s Memorial Elementary School who were in need of academic support, guidance and encouragement.
The Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State was recently awarded a $30,000 Amgen Foundation Grant to further develop the curriculum.

The mentors would work with students outside of the classroom to develop ideas for a science project. The program will also include a trip to the Amgen campus in West Greenwich.
The grants will help students develop an understanding and appreciation for science, said Anthony Pankau, vice president and site operations for Amgen Rhode Island, in a press release.
