Woonsocket Shooting Leaves Man Dead, Woman Injured

A 52-year-old man is dead after shooting his 34-year-old wife and then himself on Monday morning, Woonsocket police say.

WOONSOCKET, RI — A man is dead after shooting his wife and then himself on Monday morning, according to Woonsocket police.

Police said they were called to a home on Fairmount Street around 2:15 a.m. for a report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Walter Lopez, 52, dead with an apparent gunshot wound to his head, police said.

Lopez's 34-year-old wife had a gunshot wound in her thigh, police said. Emergency officials rushed the woman to the hospital. Police said she remains in critical condition.

Police said two other family members were home when the shooting occurred — a 3-year-old and a 20-year-old. Neither were injured.

Police said the shooting remains under investigation.
