Woman Gouges Own Eyes Out, Authorities Find Her Holding Eyeballs

"I immediately called 911 and it almost felt like the 911 dispatcher didn't even believe me. That's how crazy it was."

ANDERSON, SC — Authorities say a woman in South Carolina gouged her own eyes out and was holding them in her hands when deputies arrived. Around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Anderson County deputies responded to an area near the South Main Chapel and Recovery Center in Anderson and found the woman holding her own eyeballs.

The sheriff's office tells Patch she was "combative" and refused to allow emergency medial responders to help her.

The woman wasn't identified because she wasn't charged with any crime, authorities say.

She was reportedly airlifted to a hospital.

Elizabeth Hiott tells WYFF-TV that she was working inside the building when she heard someone screaming for her to call 911.

"It was across the street, and I could see blood, and could hear her screaming, and I realized something was wrong. Something was terribly wrong," she told the station. "I immediately called 911 and it almost felt like the 911 dispatcher didn't even believe me. That's how crazy it was."

Authorities didn't know if drugs were involved but said medical staff would be looking into that.
