📰 News we're reading

1. Body found in Broad River identified as missing Parris Island man (yourislandnews.com) — Authorities have identified Navy Corpsman Yu Wei Huo, based at Parris Island, as the man whose body was recovered Sunday along the Broad River in northern Beaufort County. NCIS and the Beaufort County Coroner's Office are investigating his death, while a second body found the same day in Chowan Creek remains unidentified pending DNA results and autopsies for both cases.

2. Traffic calming measures completed in Shell Point neighborhood (wtoc.com) — Drivers in Beaufort County's Shell Point neighborhood will now encounter nine new speed humps and a raised four-way stop, installed to slow traffic after a resident's child was injured by a speeding car. The $170,000 county project followed years of DOT studies and legislative work, and neighbors say the changes make their streets feel much safer to walk and play on.

3. Susi's gamble gives Dolphins thrilling win (yourislandnews.com) — Battery Creek High's football team is off to a historic 2-0 start for the first time since 1985 after a gutsy late two-point conversion sealed a 29-28 home win over John Paul II. With big plays on the ground and a clutch defensive interception, the Dolphins now look ahead to hosting Hardeeville at 7:30 p.m. Friday, hoping to build toward their first winning season since 2002.

4. ONLY ON 3: Beaufort County addresses license plate reader questions (wsav.com) — Beaufort County deputies are using REKOR license plate cameras to help find missing people and criminal suspects, while stressing that footage is kept just 30 days and tightly controlled. Sheriff's Office leaders say only local deputies have direct access, requests are reviewed for legitimate cases, and data isn't shared for civil immigration enforcement, aiming to balance safety with residents' privacy concerns.

5. A military fighter jet leaving Beaufort crashed into her land. Now she's suing (islandpacket.com) — A property owner is suing the U.S. government after an F-35B fighter jet from Beaufort crashed on her 107-acre farm in Williamsburg County in 2023, allegedly leaving fuel, oils, and debris behind. She claims Navy cleanup destroyed crops and timber, didn't fully address contamination, and left her land permanently affected, and now seeks compensation for remediation costs and lost use.
