Today's riddle: What is full of holes but still holds water? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Asian longhorned beetle quarantine zone updated in Charleston, Dorchester counties (counton2.com) — Charleston and Dorchester county residents will see updated Asian longhorned beetle quarantine boundaries starting Aug. 23, expanding around Hollywood and shrinking in Mount Pleasant. The changes tighten controls on moving firewood and other hardwood materials to better match where the invasive beetle is still found, aiming to protect local trees, neighborhoods, and the regional forestry economy.
2. Charleston County's finance committee approves resolution backing CARTA eminent domain action at fairgrounds (counton2.com) — Charleston County Council's finance committee has endorsed giving CARTA the go-ahead to use nearly six acres of the Coastal Carolina Fairgrounds in Ladson for a Lowcountry Rapid Transit park-and-ride, a key step for the $300 million line to Charleston's medical district. The move, following a court setback over eminent domain, now heads to full council and could significantly shape future commuting options and traffic across the region.
3. North Charleston Police arrest man accused of threatening Wells Fargo employees (live5news.com) — North Charleston police arrested a man who allegedly threatened Wells Fargo employees on Dorchester Road and damaged a worker's car in the parking lot. Officers say he made violent threats while being escorted out, then was later found at a nearby business and booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center.
4. Charleston County backs plan to protect 206-acre tract near Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge (live5news.com) — Charleston County Council has unanimously backed a plan to help protect the 206-acre White Tract at the edge of Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, trading about $1,000 a year in tax revenue for permanent conservation. The deal, led by state and nonprofit partners, would block a 200-home septic development, bolster flood resilience, and expand public access to one of the Lowcountry's most prized natural areas.
5. CofC Announces 2026–2027 Theatre and Dance Season, 'Footprints' (holycitysinner.com) — College of Charleston's theatre and dance program has unveiled its 2026–27 "Footprints" season, packed with plays, dance concerts, and collaborations with Charleston arts groups across venues like Sottile Theatre and Emmett Robinson Theatre. From macbitches and Hair to MOJA Festival offerings and student choreography, locals can already plan subscriptions, discounts, and streaming options for a full year of performances.
