It Feels Good To Get Recognition
Local photographer receives recognition at CAG event.
Being in my first cycle of the yearly arts calendar, I am trying to enter as many exhibitions and contests as possible. With some you get recognition, can win ribbons, cash prizes, etc. With some you never hear back but you can't let it bother you (too much).
If you listen to some artists., they say you should spread your work all over town and develop name recognition. Others say name recognition is good but the way to sell you art is face to face. That usually means doing shows or entering exhibitions or opening a gallery. Unfortunately, opening a gallery is not on my radar. Being a 61 year old artist that would have to lug everything and set up by myself is not as appealing as it might be if I were, say, 25 or 30.
I never realized how much getting recognition would mean to me. It is surprising how I felt after getting "honorable mention" the first time out of the gate. I received that for my submission "State Street Shadow". At the Charleston Artists Guild (CAG) Reception after the January show at the Charleston Visitors Center, cash prizes were awarded and photos were taken. Pretty exciting stuff for a newbie. This Monday a new show, the CAG Signature Exhibition, opened at the Visitors Center.

After driving downtown to the Visitors Center, at 4 pm Monday, I had a knot in my stomach. I was wondering, "Did I win anything?" I was disappointed to find out that awards had not been placed that day. I found a reason to go back downtown on Tuesday and the ribbons had been placed. I was glad that my "Great Egret" received honorable mention" but a bit disappointed it did not place. I believe it to be one of my top pieces.
If you get a chance, take a ride downtown and check out the wonderful art hanging in the Charleston Visitors Center. It will be open till 6 pm Saturday. Also, stop by the Charleston Artist Guild's Gallery on East Bay Street. You won't be disappointed.

Oh yeah, don't forget that the North Charleston Art Co-op at 1077 E. Montague St., N. Charleston is open every Friday and Saturday through the end of May. I have 6 pieces hanging there along with many talented artists. Take a few minutes to visit one or both of these events.
Have a great weekend.
