Here are the top stories in Charleston today:
- The Department of Justice has reached an $88M settlement for survivors and victims' families of the Charleston Church Shooting more than six years ago. In 2015, Dylann Roof entered Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church during Bible study and killed nine people. Victims' families sued the FBI after it was revealed that the system for conducting background checks failed to block the sale of the gun Roof would later use to kill. The settlement ended with $63 million given to the families of those killed and $25 million for the survivors. (WCBD News 2)
- Emergency crews responded to a chemical spill yesterday morning. The Charleston Fire Department says HazMat crews responded to liquid spilled from a vehicle on Promenade Vista Street just after 10 a.m. Crews determined the spilled liquid was hydrochloric acid and cleanup has been underway. - The Ralph H. Johnson VA health care system announced on Thursday that boosters for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines will be offered to Veterans under the new EUA. (Live 5 News WCSC)
- The Preservation Society of Charleston is empowering local leaders to collect the oral histories of Black-owned businesses in Charleston. (Charleston City Paper)
- Charleston native Kardea Brown of Delicious Miss Brown has signed a new two-year deal with the Food Network. (holycitysinner.com)
