Charleston to Afghanistan

A few years ago my friend Penny retired from her job as a college professor.  Not one to let dust gather, she began to look for a project.  It was just a few years after 9/11, so she decided she wanted to learn more about this strange place that was now constantly in the news.  She began to learn Arabic, and then decided to visit Afghanistan, see the country and get to know some of the people firsthand.

After a few inquiries, she ended up with a one-year teaching position at the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul.  And went on an adventure not too many of us would consider much less attempt.

From Afghanistan, she regaled us with photos and commentary about her life and the lives of the people of Kabul.  And I'm happy to say that that story has now become a book.

You can see Penny Travis' blog at www.adventureinafghanistan.blogspot.com.  Even better, while you're there, you can find a link to purchase Kabul Classroom: Memoir of an American Teacher in Afghanistan.  It's an entertaining and enlightening read.  And since it's the holiday season, it will make a great gift.
