Here are the top stories in Charleston today:
- After the Charleston County Sheriff released a video of a deputy-involved West Ashley shooting, officials have concluded that the deputy's use of force was justified. Deputy Vecchione fatally shot Jason Husted outside a home along Mona Avenue on Sept. 18. A district attorney for South Carolina's 9th Judicial Circuit said she will not pursue criminal charges against Vecchione.(ABC NEWS 4)
- The Goose Creek Police Department has arrested a North Charleston man accused of firing a gun at a gas station, then headbutting a medic in the face. Michael Lee Walden, 35, was arrested on Sunday for discharging a firearm, public drunkenness, and unlawful carrying of a weapon. (Live 5 News WCSC)
- Jim Newsome, President and CEO of the South Carolina Ports Authority, announced yesterday that he will be stepping down from his position on June 30. Current Chief Operating Officer Barbara Melvin will replace him, making her the first female leader in the port's history. (Free: Newsbreak; Subscription: Charleston Post Courier)
- The Federal Bureau of Investigations Hostage Rescue Team, a specially trained unit within the bureau, will work with federal, state, and local agencies as well as surrounding hospitals to conduct training in Charleston County through Thursday of this week. (WCBD News 2)
- In partnership with the state Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), the Charleston County Public Library will be offering free take-home, mail-in COVID-19 testing kits at select branches during a giveaway on Oct. 23. (Charleston City Paper)
