Evan Guthrie Law Firm Leads Dicussion On Civics To St. Andrews Elementary School In Charleston, SC

Attorney Evan Guthrie of the Evan Guthrie Law Firm in Charleston, South Carolina spoke to Saint Andrews Elementary School In Charleston, SC as part of the iCivics Day on Monday May 20th 2013. iCivics is an education project designed to teach  school students about the basics of civics and inspire them to be active participants in the United States democracy. The program was founded by retired United States Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor to help improve the knowledge of government and the legal system among students. Attorney Evan Guthrie spoke to two classes of fifth graders in a presentation that lasted about a hour on the topics of how laws are made, who are the elected officials in South Carolina on a state and federal level, how the voting system works, how often elections are held, how votes are counted, the requirements for running for different elected offices, the different branches of government, and many more topics on civics and government. Mr. Guthrie then took questions from the students about lawyers and the legal profession including what a lawyer does during a typical day, the many different types of attorneys and what they practice, some of the most interesting aspects of the law, how much and often legal professionals get compensated, and many other interesting and informative questions. Attorney Evan Guthrie was joined at the event by his law clerk, Hannah Kuzminski, who also answered many questions the students had.

Attorney Guthrie enjoyed being a part of iCivics day in the Charleston, SC area and the chance to get students excited and informed about their government and all the ways they can take part in it. The students that attended were really interactive in the presentation and took part in the event. Mr. Guthrie looks forward to being a part of future iCivics events again in the following year and many times in the future.
