Evan Guthrie Law Firm Leads Estate Planning Event For Sea Island Habitat For Humanity In Johns Island, SC

Attorney Evan Guthrie of the Evan Guthrie Law Firm in Charleston, South Carolina helped provide estate planning and wills for Sea Island Habitat for Humanity on Johns Island, SC on Saturday May 18th 2013. The clinic was coordinated between Sea Island Habitat and South Carolina Young Lawyers to give complimentary wills to homeowners in the program. Habitat for Humanity encourages home ownership by providing no interest loans participants in the program who also provide sweat equity to help build their home and other contributions. Homeowners in the habitat program are vulnerable to losing their homes in one or two generations after the original homeowners dies through a potentially complicated  probate court  process so it is important that they have a will in place to help ensure that the home is passed on to future generations without any complications. Executing a simple will can prevent the home’s title to be in doubt as there is a clear next owner in line after the original owner passes away. Homeowners also were able to execute advanced directives including a healthcare power of attorney and a living will, also known as a Declaration for a Desire of Natural Death in South Carolina. These documents allow end of life decisions and who would make health decisions in the case of incapacity to be recorded in writing.

Attorney Evan Guthrie and his law clerk, Hannah Kuzminski were on hand to organize and help out with the Wills Clinic. There were also many South Carolina Young Lawyers that volunteered their Saturday to help draft estate planning documents for the Habitat homeowners. This was the fifth Habitat For Humanity Wills Clinic that attorney Guthrie has either organized or volunteered with for South Carolina Young Lawyers after wills clinics in Summerville, Columbia, Mount Pleasant, and Myrtle Beach. Mr. Guthrie enjoyed volunteering and contributing to the event and the chance to give back to the community using one of his main practice areas.
