Evan Guthrie Law Firm Speaks About Lawyers To Cane Bay High School Law Ed Class

Attorney Evan Guthrie of the Evan Guthrie Law Firm in Charleston, South Carolina spoke to the law education class at Cane Bay High School in Summerville, SC on Monday September 30th 2013. Mr. Guthrie went over his experiences as a lawyer and the intricacies of the legal system from the perspective of a practitioner. The law education class goes over the basics of law from the Street Law text and highlights how the law works and interacts in the ordinary daily lives of most people. Attorney Guthrie talked about what lawyers do all day when they work, how different practice areas differ from each other in how attorneys work, the highs and lows of the practice of law, some of his most interesting experiences in his career thus far, how to go from a high school student to a lawyer in practice, how and how much attorneys get compensated for their work, and why being a lawyer is the best occupation in the world. The law education class also doubles as the school’s youth court program and Mr. Guthrie also went over some tips for trial advocacy for the students who handle real cases involving high school students. Attorney Guthrie went over opening statements, direct and cross examinations, and closing statements as well as some points on courtroom demeanor and body language.

This was the first time that Attorney Evan Guthrie has spoken to the students of Cane Bay High in classroom setting after speaking at a career day and at a lunchtime career session to students interested in legal careers. Mr. Guthrie was joined by fellow Evan Guthrie Law Firm cohort, Reilly Chapman, a paralegal intern going to school at Trident Technical College. Miss Chapman answered questions about paralegal and non lawyer legal careers. Attorney Guthrie enjoyed his visit back to Cane Bay and the chance to be able to give back to the community that he serves. Mr. Guthrie looks forward to being able to return to the school in the future.
