Here are the top stories in Charleston today:
- The public comment period for the Army Corps of Engineers' proposal to abate flooding in Charleston is closing today. The proposal includes a seawall around the peninsula that would rise 12 feet above sea level to protect against hurricane storm surges. Residents may submit their comments on the Corps' draft feasibility report and environmental impact statement, which will be finalized next year. (Live 5 News WCSC)
- The Lowcountry Corridor East project would widen 13 miles of Interstate 526 from North Charleston through Daniel Island and into Mount Pleasant, from four to eight lanes — but it could cost a whopping $4 billion. The road project would be South Carolina's most expensive to date, and would likely require replacing both the Don Holt and James B. Edwards (Wando) bridges in the process. - North Charleston's Park Circle Gallery on 4820 Jenkins Avenue has announced it will exhibit works by local artists Brad Carroll, a Mount Pleasant painter, and Lee Garrard of Johns Island, from Nov. 3 to Nov. 24. (Charleston Currents)
- Attendance is dwindling at Joint Base Charleston's chapel, leaving its 50 regular congregants to fear that the military-only Protestant church will eventually close. (Hilton Head Island Packet)
