There are a lot of reasons we don't feel heard by our legislators here in South Carolina. Governor Haley continues to refuse to accept federal money -- our tax dollars -- for Medicaid expansion, instead attempted to put a band-aid on the uninsured with state dollars that could be better spent elsewhere.
For example, education. Too many of our schools continue to struggle to be "minimally adequate," which means too many good teachers leave, and far too many children are left unprepared for their futures. When you believe in something, you invest in it, and South Carolina is reluctant to invest enough in our children's education to make a difference.
Too many tax dollars have been wasted trying to prove voter fraud that doesn't exist, and to make it more difficult for many of us to vote.
So what do we do when our elected officials aren't listening?
Truthful Tuesdays is an organization that is sponsored by churches and civic organizations, and invites us to gather as a group to let our legislators know how to better represent us. Rally with them at the Statehouse Tuesday, January 14, as our legislative session begins. Every one of us who shows up increases the likelihood that we will be heard.
