Here are the top stories in Charleston today:

  1. The Charleston Fire Department rescued a group of people who were trapped inside an elevator. The fire department reported that the elevator at The Vendue Hotel was overloaded with eleven people and stopped operating. The elevator occupants were safely removed and no injuries were reported.   2. A Charleston restaurant owner was arrested for failure to report nearly $1M in revenue. The South Carolina Department of Revenue announced the arrest of forty-year-old Ross McRae Webb, who owns two restaurants in Charleston. According to SCDOR, "Webb underreported sales by at least $997,265 and evaded paying more than $89,754 in Sales Tax due to the state" between 2018 and 2021. (WSAV-TV)
  3. The South Carolina Aquarium announced its 11th annual Sea Life by Starlight party, which will be benefitting the aquarium's Sea Turtle Care Center. (WCBD News 2)
  4. A mother and her newborn baby are recovering at MUSC after a close call with COVID-19. (WSAV-TV)
  5. The Charleston Jazz Orchestra will kick off the 14th season in Feb. with singer/saxophonist Camille Thurman, a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in New York City. (Charleston Currents)
