Homes for Sale in Historic Charleston

The city that inspired Margaret Mitchell and Pat Conroy.

“Charleston has a landscape that encourages intimacy and partisanship. I have heard it said that an inoculation to the sights and smells of the Carolina lowcountry is an almost irreversible antidote to the charms of other landscapes, other alien geographies. You can be moved profoundly by other vistas, by other oceans, by soaring mountain ranges, but you can never be seduced. You can even forsake the lowcountry, renounce it for other climates, but you can never completely escape the sensuous, semitropical pull of Charleston and her marshes.”

Pat Conroy, the Lords of Discipline

No city in the US has quite the attraction of Historic Charleston. A top tourist destination, visitors come to walk down streets lined with moss-laden ancient oaks, imagining the world of plantations and gentility in the old South. From churches and structures built in the 1700s to the beautiful mansions that have been meticulously preserved, captivated tourists return to drink in the beauty and lowcountry ambiance again and again. A cultural mecca in the south, Charleston has garnered honors for being one of the best dressed, most friendly, most romantic, and sexiest cities in the country. You will also find some of the best restaurants in the world, amazing art galleries, interesting shops, and incredible entertainment opportunities.

Nowhere in South Carolina is the past as evident as it is on the cobblestone streets of downtown Charleston with perfectly manicured gardens and wrought iron gates. The busy shops and old antebellum homes on King Street remain much as they were in the early days of America. Named Charles Towne when it was established in 1670 on the banks of the Ashley River, it was moved in 1680 to avail itself of the deeper water of the Charleston Harbor, and in 1793, the name was changed to Charleston to remove itself from association with the British monarchy.

History is alive everywhere in Charleston but especially in downtown where reminders of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars are prominent attractions. For over 200 years, City Market has been the center of life in Charleston. The Battery, now a promenade, was a seawall constructed on the Charleston Harbor to defend the city against attacks during the Civil War. You can still enjoy a drink in the very taverns and halls where Colonists plotted against the British Realm. Churches more than 200 years old stand majestically next to museums, art galleries, stately historic homes, and world-famous restaurants.
