Local Executive Named To The Board Of National Non-Profit

BJ Harrington, the director of development at the Medical University of South Carolina, joins the board of directors of the Young Marines.

The members of the board of directors of the Young Marines, a national youth organization, announce a new board member - Beverly J. “BJ” Harrington of Charleston, South Carolina.

“Ms. Harrington has tremendous experience in development activities including fundraising, strategic communications, and marketing,” said William L. Smith, chair of the board of directors of the Young Marines. “In addition, she brings extensive nonprofit executive-level experience having worked for and served both on nonprofit boards and at the corporate level. She also has entrepreneurial experience having founded her own company with services that included strategic planning and communications. It is my intent to immediately leverage her significant experience by appointing her as chair of the Development Committee.”

Harrington is the director of development at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). She provides leadership for principal and major gifts to the College of Medicine with special strategic focus on endowments and scholarships. She also assists with planning to increase private philanthropic support for selected clinical projects and regional partnerships.

Before joining MUSC, she served as senior director for the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida, and she managed major gift and capital campaign fundraising for Inova Health System’s Heart & Vascular Institute in Fairfax, Virginia.

In addition, Harrington served as vice president for Marketing and Community Relations at the UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center in Culpeper, Virginia, and as executive director for the Culpeper Regional Healthcare Foundation.

Currently serving on the MUSC Arboretum Board, her former affiliations include editorial board chair for the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy’s Journal; president of the Pennsylvania Dental Hygiene Association Board of Trustees; the Clemson University Parent’s Council; and she was a volunteer for Project Healing Water, a fly-fishing therapy program for military veterans.

Harrington has a master’s degree from the University of Miami and a bachelor’s degree from California University of Pennsylvania. She studied dental hygiene at the University of Pittsburgh. She also holds credentials from Certified Fund-Raising Executive, International.

She has volunteered as a youth writing mentor, swim coach, and Boy Scouting in the communities in which she lived. Her husband is a Vietnam veteran, and their three children are active-duty military.

“I am honored to serve on the board of directors for the Young Marines. As a professional in the development community, I am pleased to be able to share my knowledge and experience to better the organization and help it grow,” said BJ. “As a mother, I see the amazing opportunities the program provides to children across the USA, and I am excited to share the message of the Young Marines and why programs like this are important to the future of our country.”

The Young Marines is a national non-profit 501(c)(3) youth education and service program for boys and girls, age eight through the completion of high school. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral, and physical development of its members. The program focuses on teaching the values of leadership, teamwork, and self-discipline so its members can live and promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

Since the Young Marines' humble beginnings in 1959 with one unit and a handful of boys, the organization has grown to over 235 units with 7,500 youth and 2,500 adult volunteers in 46 states, the District of Columbia, Germany, Japan, and affiliates in a host of other countries.
