Tim Mallard, Charleston City Council District 11 representative announced Tuesday he will not seek re-election this year.

CHARLESTON - City Councilman Tim Mallard of the 11th District, which covers portions of West Ashley anounced Tuesday he would not seek re-election.

"I won’t say that my first foray into public service has been easy. As a matter of fact, some  of it has proven downright difficult. But overall, I would say that the time I have spent in public life has been an Honor," Mallard wrote in a statement.

"After careful consideration, I have decided that at this time in my life, I must focus my energies elsewhere. Several professional Business opportunities have been presented to me that I simply cannot ignore and I must focus my energies on those opportunities for now."

"While I don’t have Tim’s style or agree with him on everything, I applaud Tim’s public service.  We have a similar commitment for Charleston’s great city government to be better, more accountable and more transparent."

Mallard was first elected in 2007. His campaign included cutting spending, solving traffic problems, finding "common-sense solutions" to over development, overcrowding and congestion, and protecting families by giving first responders the resources needed to fulfill their jobs, according to a statement on his website.

Districts 1,3,5,7,9 and 11 will be on the ballot in this year's election, schedled for Tuesday, Nov. 8. The last day to register for the election is Saturday, Oct. 8, according to the Charleston County Board of Elections and Voter Registration.
