Here are the top stories today in Charleston:
- The Charleston County Public Safety Directorate and Charleston County School District have partnered to create a new program for high school students interested in a career in public safety. The two-year program requires four to six weeks of paid training in the summer months for high school juniors and another four to eight weeks of paid training for returning seniors the following summer. Applicants who complete the certification courses will be eligible for a fast track to employment with the 9-1-1 Consolidated Dispatch Center or Emergency Medical Services. (holycitysinner.com)
- In an effort to educate the public on good recycling practices, Charleston County will begin tagging contaminated recycling bins. Starting Oct. 11, environmental management crews will be looking inside recycling bins placed on the curb to ensure that all items are recyclable. Bins contaminated with non-recyclable items will be marked with an "oops" tag, which also provides educational information. (WCBD News 2)
- The Charleston Literary Festival has announced a collaboration with The Booker Prize, and a partnership with Breeze Airways in which they will be giving away two free airline tickets to Charleston. (holycitysinner.com)
