Safe bicycle route over the Ashley a priority for Mayor Riley

Early July death of cyclist on the James Island Connector spurring intensified demand for a solution

CHARLESTON - Providing a safe way for bicyclists to cross the Ashley River into downtown is a priority for Mayor Joseph Riley.

The mayor says the city and county are currently studying the best way to accomplish it, but no definite plans are in place yet. Charleston biking advocates have been calling for a fix to the problem for years and their cause is getting new and intensified support in the wake of the death of Dr. Mitchell Hollon who was struck and killed by a driver while riding his bike over the James Island Connector in early July.
