Here are the top stories in Charleston today:
- South Carolina Senator Tom Davis wrote to fellow Senator Lindsey Graham and Representative Jim Clyburn to ask for help funding some large-scale Lowcountry development projects that will bring much-needed jobs and revenue to the area. Davis requested an initial $11.3 million in federal money to "pay for infrastructure that is immediately needed to facilitate economic development" in Jasper County. Among the planned projects is one spearheaded by Charleston-based Gramling Brothers Real Estate & Development, which will be developing the 2,500-acre mixed-use Riverport Park community along the Savannah River. - A 365-unit apartment project called The Darby has been proposed for Charleston's upper peninsula. The complex would be built on Meeting Street Road near Greenleaf Street on just over three acres owned by Cooper River Corp. LLC. - Dozens of local residents attended a Peace Walk through downtown Charleston Saturday morning to "encourage unity and demonstrate love in the community," according to Mount Zion AME Church Leader Dr. Kylon Middleton. (Live 5 News WCSC)
- The Charleston County Public Safety Directorate and Charleston County School District are partnering to create a new summer program for high school students interested in a career in public safety. Those who complete the program's certification courses will be eligible for a fast track to employment with the county's 9-1-1 Consolidated Dispatch Center or Emergency Medical Services. - Charleston County Coroner Bobbi Jo O'Neal has confirmed that two human feet that washed up far apart on the South Carolina shore both belonged to Janet Robinson, a 57-year-old woman who went missing. Her cause of death is still under investigation. (wpde.com)
