West Ashley 10U All-stars fall to Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant team knocks West Ashley out of contention for state title

CHARLESTON - The Mount Pleasant 10U All-star team eliminated the West Ashley 10U All-stars in Cal Ripken Youth Baseball State Tournament Monday, 6-3.

The contest was much closer than the score implies though. Both teams held each other scoreless through four innings.

But Mount Pleasant broke it open in the fifth scoring all 6 of its runs. West Ashley answered with 3 runs of its own in the inning, but couldn't keep the rally going long enough to overcome the Mount Pleasant lead.

Neither team scored in the sixth, and Mount Pleasant held on for the win.

"The kids played good, it's just the way it goes," West Ashley Head Coach Jim Clemente said. "A few clutch hits here or there could change the game. I'm proud of 'em."

The team, which also lost the district title to Mount Pleasant, finished third in the state, and second in its district.

"The competition has been good, all the teams have been good, everything comes down to a hit here of a hit there, sometimes the breaks go your way, sometimes they go the other way," Clemente said.

"These tournaments are building blocks," he said. "They'll continue to play travel ball, that's our next season, we'll be starting that in three weeks."
