West Ashley, Goose Creek teams advance in Cal Ripken Youth Baseball State Tournament

Local teams in both divisions win Friday games

CHARLESTON - Cal Ripken Youth Baseball State Tournament host teams, the 9U West Ashley All-stars and the 10U West Ashley All-stars remain alive after winning games Friday.

The 9U team (2-0) is vying for a championship on Sunday after defeating the 9U North Agusta All-star team 2-1. Winning pitcher for the West Ashley team, Bryce Brown struck out nine batters in four innings of work, and went 2-3 at the plate. 

West Ashley put the first run on the board in the top of the first, but North Agusta answered, tying it up in the bottom of the second. The game remained knotted at 1-1 until West Ashley added the winning run in the top of the sixth.

Jettt Kirshtein led the scoring for the team batting in a run and scoring the team's other run, going 2-4 at the plate with a double. Chai Kirshstein was 2-4 at the plate.

West Ashley could face North Agusta (1-1) again on Sunday if the team survives an elimination game against Goose Creek (1-1), who eliminated the Mount Pleasant All-stars (0-2) Friday 9-6.

Cody Ward got the win for Goose Creek in a game that stayed close until the final inning. Goose Creek plated three runs in the top of the first, but Mount Pleasant answered with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning.Goose Creek added three more runs in the second, and Mount Pleasant answered again with three of their own in their half of the inning.

Mount Pleasant tied the game at 6-all in the bottom of the fourth after keeping Goose Creek scoreless for two innings. But Goose Creek scored the go-ahead run in the fifth and added two more insurance runs in the sixth.

Ward and Ian Young each had two hits for Goose Creek. Mount Pleasant's Austin Mozer had three hits and Hayden Asbill, who took the loss from the mound added two hits as well.

Goose Creek faces North Agusta Saturday at 6 p.m. The winner will play West Ashley at 1 p.m. at St. Andrews Parks.

In the 10U division the West Ashley All-stars (2-1) eliminated North Agusta (0-2) 6-4 on Friday.

West Ashley scored first, putting up a run in the top of the first, but North Agusta took the lead 3-1 in the bottom of the inning. West Ashley took control of the game in the top of the third though, scoring four runs. The team added another run in the fifth and limited North Agusta to one run the rest of the way.

The team will play Gaffeny (1-1) in an elimination game 6 p.m. Saturday at West Ashley Park.

Gaffney received its first loss from Mount Pleasant (2-0) Friday in an 11-1 game that was called after the fifth inning on the 10-run Rule. Mount Pleasant scored once in the first and third innings and then netted four runs in the fourth and five in the fifth. Gaffney could only manage a single run in the top of the fourth.

Mount Pleasant will play Goose Creek (2-0) in a winner's bracket game 6 p.m. Saturday at St. Andrews Parks.

Goose Creek beat Boiling Springs 10-1 on Friday. Boiling Springs (1-1) scored a run in the top of the first, then Goose Creek broke the game open sending five runners across home plate in its half of the inning.

Goose Creek added five more runs in the fourth to finish out the scoring.
