1. Conway woman accused of stealing from, unlawfully obtaining power of attorney over vulnerable adult (wbtw.com) — Conway police have arrested a 58-year-old local woman accused of exploiting a vulnerable adult by taking control of his property and withdrawing more than $17,000 after allegedly obtaining power of attorney. Investigators also say she gave false information to obtain money from the Housing Authority of Conway, and she remains jailed on a $45,000 bond.
2. Conway implementing new traffic, safety measures for Halloween season (wbtw.com) — Downtown Conway will see expanded road closures, one-way patterns, and a new shuttle system throughout October as the city braces for about 600,000 Halloween visitors. Police and fire staffing will increase, and officials urge residents and guests to check the Conway Police Facebook page for closure maps, use shuttles when possible, and stay alert while walking among the pumpkin-filled decorations.
3. CCU breaks ground on $75M health, human performance building (wbtw.com) — Coastal Carolina University in Conway has started building a $75 million Health and Human Performance facility that will house the Conway Medical Center College of Health and Human Performance. The 85,000-square-foot building will add classrooms, labs, and a community health outreach center serving Horry and Georgetown residents, with completion expected in fall 2028 as CCU expands its health programs.
4. Pumpkins removed from Conway High ahead of ‘City of Halloween' celebration (wpde.com) — Conway High's plastic pumpkin decorations were removed from campus trees after Horry County Schools told the city additional approval was needed, even though students and staff requested them. As Conway launches its huge "City of Halloween" celebration, many residents are questioning why the high school can't share in the same festive tradition seen across the rest of town.
5. What to know about cychlorphine, a new synthetic opioid raising alarm (wral.com) — Health officials are warning Conway and South Carolina residents about cychlorphine, a new synthetic opioid described by a Conway Medical Center examiner as up to ten times stronger than fentanyl. While no local overdoses have been seen yet, state leaders and Coastal Carolina University are urging vigilance because the drug is hard to detect and has already been linked to dozens of deaths nationwide.
