Today's riddle: What do you call a belt that is made of watches? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Carolina Champion: Tonya Flowers turns personal pain into mission to help others (wpde.com) — Right in downtown Darlington, survivor-turned-advocate Tonya Flowers runs House of Refuge on South Main Street, offering a safe house and support programs for local women and children escaping domestic violence. Her nonprofit has already helped more than 435 women and now also tackles bullying, suicide risk, and addiction through youth outreach and peer support. Residents can reach out directly for confidential help or to support the mission.
2. How One Family Doubled The Rescue Effect's Impact (aspca.org) — A pit bull named Zoey spent nearly 10 months at the Darlington County Humane Society in Hartsville before finally finding a home with a couple who also fostered, then adopted, another dog, Buffy. Their commitment, highlighted by a local Darlington County TV appearance, shows how fostering and adoption can transform multiple shelter dogs' lives and supports the ASPCA's Rescue Effect campaign.
3. BBB Applications for Business Awards and Student Scholarships Open (dillonnews.org) — Businesses and students in Darlington County can now apply for the BBB Torch Awards for Ethics and BBB Torch Scholarships, with applications due November 2, 2026. Local companies that demonstrate strong ethical practices and college‑bound students or undergraduates living or studying in the county are eligible, giving Darlington residents a chance at recognition and financial support.
4. A Clean Energy Win for Darlington County South Carolina (sierraclub.org) — Darlington County Council has voted 5–3 against a nine‑month moratorium on new solar and wind projects, keeping the door open for more renewable energy investment locally. After months of organizing, Sierra Club advocates helped secure approval for three 75‑megawatt solar projects and defeat the proposed pause, which supporters say will aid the local grid and potentially lower electric bills for Darlington County residents.
