Francis Marion Markers Unveiled at Old Santee Canal Park

Release:

On Sunday, May 6, two of the six Berkeley County Francis Marion Trail Commission (FMTC) markers  were unveiled at the Old Santee Canal Park in Moncks Corner.  South Carolina Daughters of the American Revolution State Regent Marilyn Altman and Kitty Mescher, member of the Berkeley County Historical Society and of Gen. Marion's Brigade Chapter, NSDAR, unveiled one marker and FMTC Chairman Ben Zeigler and his son unveiled the other marker. These markers explain two important sites in Moncks Corner: Fort Fairlawn and the Fairlawn Mansion.  FMTC markers are all over the Low Country of South Carolina. Berkeley County is very rich in American Revolution history. General Francis Marion took the fight to the British here and in several other counties. Berkeley County FMTC Markers are at Wadboo Creek, Quinby Bridge/Shubrick's Plantation, and Marion's Tomb.

The FMTC's goal is to promote Historic Tourism in the South Carolina Lowcountry. It was set up in 2005 to organize and promote the history of Marion's contributions to American Independence.  Marion was the highest ranking Continental Officer in South Carolina at the time of the Charleston surrender to the British on May 12, 1780. He organized a militia of backwoodsmen that consistently disrupted the British supply and communication lines, fought skirmishes and battles with the British and freed many captured Americans. Because Marion tied down the British resources in South Carolina, he is largely responsible for the eventual end of British rule. The last years of the American Revolution were fought primarily in South Carolina.
