The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic team (HEAT) continued their DUI enforcement campaign throughout the 2012 year.Â
With prom season nearing or occurring in Berkeley County high schools, the HEAT team made appearances at these schools, and large social gatherings to speak to the students. These appearances included discussions about DUI laws, underage drinking and consequences to make students aware of the extreme dangers associated with impaired driving.

Students also participated in sobriety test and driving in "drunk" simulation goggles in events hosted by the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, Emergency Medical Service providers and emergency room staff.
The members of the HEAT team also were recognized at the state's annual DUI enforcement awards ceremony in Columbia. Sgt. Lonnie Mizzell, Cpl. Christopher Dirks and Cpl. Justin Bowman were awarded the DUI "Golden Hero" award as each deputy made over 50 DUI arrests for 2011. Their efforts for DUI enforcement, awareness and deterrence will continue throughout the year of 2012.
