Learn about the new vision for education at Education Connect

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – (Oct. 26, 2011) / www.berkeley.k12.sc.us / –  Educators, business leaders and elected officials will gather at the 2011 S.C. Education Connect: Competing in a Global Society on Thursday, Nov. 3, to discuss the challenges and opportunities in education in a global economy. There will be panel discussions throughout the day.

Keynote speakers are Dr. Yong Zhou and Jamie Vollmer.  Zhou, Presidential Chair and Associate Dean for Globalization at the University of Oregon, will discuss a radical new approach to preparing students for the globalized world. Vollmer, author of Schools Cannot Do it Alone, makes the case that public education has the opportunity to turn the tide of American opinion about public education.

Also scheduled to participate are state leaders Secretary Dick Riley, Sen. Hugh Leatherman, State Board Chair Gerrita Postelwait, AT&T President Pamela Lackey, and many other influential South Carolinians.   

Superintendents around the state partnered in writing a state-wide vision for education -- which will be unveiled at the conference --  and the conversation around the vision statements will begin. The public will be asked to continue the conversation of building support for public education in the local community.  Learn more about the vision at www.oureducationvision.com.

“This is our chance as South Carolina education leaders to hit a home run and we need your support,” said Molly Spearman, SCASA director.  “A tremendous amount of energy has been placed in making this day a huge success but we need every district and community represented.”   The event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel, 2100 Bush River Rd., in Columbia.  Business people, parents, board members, community organizations and the public are invited to attend.  Online registration is available at www.scasa.org.  The registration fee is $50.  For information, contact SCASA at 803-798-8380.
