North Charleston, S.C. / October 20, 2011- Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States for both men and women. The disease claims more lives each year than colon, prostate, ovarian, lymph and breast cancers combined. A simple screening could be the difference between early detection and death. Â Beginning November, Trident Medical Center will be providing lung cancer screenings with low dose CT technology. Using CT scans to screen smokers for lung cancer cuts the risk of death from the disease by 20 percent versus those screened by a chest X-ray, according to a new National Cancer Institute study. Trident Medical Center is the only hospital in the Lowcountry that offers this new low dose CT screening for lung cancer. Â What are the risk factors for lung cancer?
- Age greater than 50 years
- History of smoking or currently a smoker
- Family history of cancer.
Throughout November, Trident Medical Center invites individuals to take advantage of this important screening for the special rate of $99. Because this is a screening, and it is for individuals without symptoms but who may be at risk for lung cancer, insurance does not cover the cost. Individuals can benefit from this important screening by obtaining a referral from their physician, and then calling 843-797-8554 to schedule a screening.
