Blotter: Man Found Asleep in Car, Gun in Lap

Goose Creek Police respond to suspicious vehicle in Fairfax.

A Goose Creek officer was patrolling the Fairfax subdivision on Nov. 5 when he got a call to check on a suspicious vehicle.

Approaching the car, the officer saw a young man asleep in the drivers seat. Getting closer, he then noticed there was a 9mm handgun in the man's lap, with the man's hands resting on top of the gun.

The officer stepped away from the car and called for backup. Once help arrived, efforts were unsuccessful to call to the driver from a safe distance and get him wake up.

Three officers approached the car and, at last, were able to get the man to awaken. He complied with requests and got out of the vehicle safely.

Police would learn that the man, 21, lived at the home but didn't have a key on him and couldn't get in the house. He told police that the gun had been in his glovebox and he had planned to take it in to store in the house.

When he couldn't get inside, he returned to the car to wait on his mother to get home and let him in. Instead of putting the gun back in the glovebox, he accidentally left it on his lap.

Because of a past felony conviction, the gun was confiscated, but no charges were immediately filed in last week's incident.
