Boeing Finishes Big Week With Solar Power

SCE&G flips the switch on plant's rooftop energy source.

It's been a big week for Boeing in North Charleston. First, the National Labor Relations Board . On Thursday, the company cut the ribbon on another local facility that will provide interior fittings for the planes.

And, on Friday, SCE&G announced that 10 acres of solar panels on the main facility's 14-acre rooftop have been turned on.

In a release, the power company called it one of the largest rooftop solar installations in the U.S. and the largest in the Southeast.

"This project is a classic example of working with our customers to supply their energy needs, but with a new twist," said SCANA Chairman and CEO Kevin Marsh. "SCE&G for the first time is supplying a facility with 100 percent green power. I commend Boeing for their commitment to sustainability and for the opportunity they presented us to supply this site with renewable power."

The 2.6 megawatts of electrical power generated for the site is enough to power approximately 250 homes, according to SCE&G.
