Awards Signify Consistent Excellence At RSFH -- But Aren't End Goal

Plaudits merely the result of excellent care, not the ultimate prize.

Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital and Roper Hospital have recently again been recognized with national awards, but system leaders say it's what those honors represent -- great health care -- that is really important.

"Recognition is nice, no doubt," said St. Francis CEO Allen Carroll. "But being able to offer our patients quality care that allows them to live fuller lives is really what inspires us."

For the second year in a row, Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital was named one of Truven Health’s 100 Top Hospitals in America.

St. Francis is the only hospital in the Lowcountry to earn a spot in the rankings published by the company formerly know as Thomson-Reuters. The annual list is compiled from the results of a study that analyzes hospitals based on overall organizational performance.

As an award winner, BSSF has set national benchmarks for the highest balanced performance in the nation,  which means the facility is more likely than others to have systems to safeguard patients from medical errors, provide treatments to get proven clinical results and deliver effective care at a reasonable cost.  

Hospitals are evaluated in 10 areas: mortality; medical complications; patient safety; average patient stay; expenses; profitability; patient satisfaction; adherence to clinical standards of care; and post-discharge mortality, and readmission rates for heart attacks, heart failure and pneumonia.

Hospitals to not apply or pay for this recognition.
