Patched Up!: How to Break the News

How to let people know.

By Mary Decker - Mulbry, M.D., Radiation Oncology Board Certified

Sometimes it comes after months of ignoring that aching feeling. Sometimes the news that you are seriously ill comes with no warning. Whatever the circumstances, one of the first steps you can take toward mending is sharing the news about your illness with those in your inner-circle. But it can be a difficult conversation. Here are some tips on how to break the news.

-Start with what brought you to this point, "You know I haven't been feeling well,” or, "I went to the doctor for that pain in my arm and I want to tell you what I know.”

-Outline the doctor's diagnosis and briefly explain recommendations for treatment and management.  If you can't remember because of the shock of the diagnosis, consider making a second appointment and go with family or friends. Have them take notes.

-Give them time to adjust and ask questions.

-Talk about how you think this health problem may affect your life and your relationships with your family and friends.

-Do not hesitate to ask your loved ones for help from the beginning. They want to help rather than feel helpless. Whether it is emotional support, company at appointments, assistance with household chores or even "I don't know what I need now or in the future, I'm still dealing with this new reality. Can I call you when I'm ready? I may just need you to listen."

-Remember, you may have an illness but it doesn't define you or your relationships
