Patched Up!: Much To Celebrate At MPH
Mount Pleasant Hospital celebrates its second birthday -- and success.
Compare for yourself and celebrate with Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital
By John Sullivan, CEO, Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital
As Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital begins its third year of operation, there is much to celebrate.
Our hospital is a critical access point for medical care delivered by the most trusted healthcare system in the Lowcounty, Roper St. Francis. Especially exciting is that in 2011 alone, almost 6,000 people who had never before been treated anywhere in our entire system, registered for treatment at Mount Pleasant hospital.

When we opened the doors of our beautiful, high-tech hospital near Wando High School in November 2010, the economy was challenging. It’s not much better now. The hospital, however, is thriving. We have even surpassed projected growth — in surgical services (up 46 percent), outpatient and women’s services. While experienced corporate strategists usually plan to operate new businesses at a financial loss for the first three years, we beat our own projections, operating in the black after just one year.
Now Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital provides almost every specialty to its neighbors east of the Cooper. Our services include cardiology, emergency medicine, endocrinology, family practice and internal medicine, gastrointestinal imaging, intensive care, orthopedics, outpatient physical therapy, plastic and reconstructive surgery, nephrology, pulmonology, spine surgery and radiology, upper extremity treatment, and women’s services. Our cardiac rehabilitation program is planned for 2013.

Are these services needed? Yes, most definitely, according to our patients and our community, evidenced by growth. For example, just a few months ago there were approximately 8,600 open building permits for housing in Mount Pleasant. And our young hospital has seen numerous new medical and healthcare neighbors emerge just recently. We’ve come here to grow with the community over time. We believe the people east of the Cooper are worth the investment.
In addition to our community hospital role, Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant offers the benefits of being part of a larger healthcare system. Some of those benefits include access to lifesaving clinical trials and specialty care like the South’s leading Total Joint Replacement program, comprehensive oncology, neurology and neurosurgery programs, and the Heart and Vascular Center at Roper Hospital. Many of the system’s 800 board certified physicians bring their services to our hospital and see patients in our medical office building.
So, we celebrate and we offer thanks. Thank you, Mount Pleasant neighbors, for your generous support and for the letters of appreciation that you send. We also want to thank our outstanding staff, nurses and doctors who perform at a level that is consistently extraordinary.
Finally, we invite you to compare hospitals for yourself. The federal government tracks our quality and patient satisfaction scores on http://www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov/. Take a look. It may help you make your next medical care choice.
We are honored to be a part of your community and we look forward to many years of healing all people east of the Cooper with compassion, faith and excellence.
