Trust, Rest, And Wait When Your Mind Turns To Tricky Situations
Strategies from the book of Psalms for handling tricky situations in your life
Psalm 37:1-10,17,23,24,27
Do not fret because of evildoers, for they will wither quickly like the grass, And fade like the green herb. Trust in the LORD, and do good; Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness. Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, and He will do it. And He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, And your judgment as the noonday. Rest in the LORD and wait patiently for Him; Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret, [it leads] only to evildoing. For evildoers will be cut off, But those who wait for the LORD, they will inherit the land. Yet in a little while the wicked man will be no more; And you will look carefully for his place, and he will not be [there]. The LORD sustains the righteous. The steps of a man are established by the LORD; And He delights in his way. When he falls, he shall not be hurled headlong; Because the LORD is the One who holds his hand. Depart from evil, and do good, So you will abide forever.
The Book of Psalms in the Old Testament of the Bible is a “strategy guide” for handling tricky situations in your life. Think of it like a song book. The “song writer” is the person who wrote the particular “psalm” or song. The writer generally has some major trouble in his life. He pours out his heart to God and then with God’s help, comes up with great strategies for handling the problem. The ultimate lesson in these psalms which you can apply to your own life every single day, is that no matter how bad things may look, turn the problem over to God. He’s not going to let you fall because He is there holding your hand. Don’t worry if someone or something is really tricky for you. When you spend to much time worrying or “fretting,” it only leads to doing something that will make the situation worse. Instead, the minute you mind flicks to whatever is bothering you, think: “Trust, Rest, and Wait.” Begin by trusting in God to handle whatever is troubling your heart. You can’t control an “evil doer” which is another name for the person or situation that is bothering you and stealing your sense of peace. Concentrate instead on “doing good and delighting yourself in God.” That’s what you can control. Delighting yourself in God means that instead of telling people how freaked out you are, let people know that you have turned the problem over to God and are now “resting” as you “wait patiently for Him to act.” That’s how you demonstrate your faith to others, so they will know how to act when tricky things come into their life. And as you speak about your confidence in God’s ability to handle what you cannot, your heart will feel better too! So the next time Satan tries to throw an ugly trap of anxiety your way, designed especially to steal your joy, repeat in your mind, “Trust, Rest and Wait,” as you hold tightly to the precious hand of the Creator of the universe who will not let you fall.
