Census: Berkeley County Growing Strong

Estimates suggest Goose Creek, Hanahan, Moncks Corner growing at a faster rate than Charleston neighbors.

As builders start to pick up where they left off a few years ago, it's clear they're growing where they can find the room: Berkeley County.

The latest U.S. Census estimates suggest that Goose Creek and its fellow Berkeley municipalities appear to be growing at a rate outpacing Charleston County neighbors.

Census numbers in April 2010 pinned Goose Creek's population at 35,938. Estimates released last week suggest the municipality has grown to over 37,000.

Hanahan went from 17,997 residents to the most recent estimate of 18,579. Moncks Corner is up from 7,885 to 8,151.

That's more than a 3 percent climb for all three communities, while North Charleston, Mount Pleasant and Charleston each grow at or below 2.3 percent. The nationwide average is at 1 percent.

And the growth continues in Goose Creek. Construction has started on 91 new homes between January and May, according to city figures. And the Daniel Island Co. is expected to .
